Clinical Professor & Director, Music Business Program, NYU Steinhardt
Larry Miller is a professor of Music Business at NYU Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions where he is director of the Music Business program. He is a music and technology entrepreneur, advisor, producer and host of the Musonomics podcast. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on music entrepreneurship, music analytics, strategic marketing, global music management and the business structure of the music industry. He advises music creators and rights holders on public policy and litigation and provided expert testimony before the United States Copyright Review Board and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Larry supports media and technology companies and their financial sponsors on capital formation and growth strategy, digital product and service development, acquisitions and restructuring. Previously, Larry was a Partner at L.E.K. Consulting and a senior member of the firm’s media and entertainment practice. He later served as Executive Vice President and General Manager of MediaNet.
Larry founded and operated Or Music, a Grammy Award winning independent record label and music publisher where he signed, recorded and published multi-platinum artists Los Lonely Boys and Matisyahu; he was Vice President of Market Development at AT&T Labs Research, and began his career as a broadcaster at Tribune, NBC Radio Entertainment and WHTZ/Z100 New York, regarded as the most successful startup in U.S. radio history as the station went from “worst to first” within 72 days of signing-on in the country’s most competitive radio market.
Larry has commented on CBS, ABC, CNBC, CNN, Fox News and NPR; in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Time, Business Week, Financial Times, The Economist, Los Angeles Times, Billboard and Rolling Stone. He is the author of "Same Heart/New Beat: How Record Labels Amplify Talent in the Modern Music Marketplace." His article "Metadata: How to Develop the Foundation for the Music Business of Tomorrow" was published in The Licensing Journal, and "Paradigm Shift: Why Radio Must Adapt to the Rise of Digital" was published in Entertainment and Sports Lawyer, the ABA Forum on the Entertainment and Sports Industries.
He earned an MBA at Columbia Business School, and BA at Brandeis University.

Digital Streaming: Envisioning a More Equitable Model

The pandemic has led many streaming royalty recipients to take a hard look at their royalty statements and question the fairness of how streaming and other digital royalties are split. This panel will look at the recent UK-based government hearings on this issue, user-centric and other digital payment models, and the laws and regulations which would have to be changed in order to start rebalancing digital royalty payments.

Looking past hi-res audio and playlists at their fingertips, the music fan is currently enjoying a plethora of new discovery, experience and ownership tools and offerings, while the industry focuses on crafting solid financial models to insure their viability. We’ll address the following questions: What does a decentralized streaming platform look like? Will AR transform music discovery through sunglasses? Will blockchain protocols and NFTs provide artists with enhanced financial security or end up being as transitional as ringtones? The digital music industry continues to find its footing in an ever-shifting terrain – we will be sharing our views on where we feel it will land.
