As Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs for Universal Music Group, Carla manages all aspects of intellectual property strategy, pre-release clearances, risk analysis, litigation, AI policy and strategy and internal investigations at the global powerhouse music and entertainment company. While in private practice, among other notable cases, Carla represented the U.S. major record labels’ and motion picture studios’ interests in several landmark cases of first impression involving copyright law and the First Amendment.

Carla has served on the Executive Committee of the Commercial & Federal Litigation Section of the New York State Bar Association. She was a founding co-chair of the Section’s Corporate Litigation Counsel Committee and also co-chaired its Diversity Committee. In that capacity, Carla co-chaired the annual “Smooth Moves: Career Strategies for Attorneys of Color” CLE program and awards ceremony at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, which has become the premier diversity event for the New York State Bar.

Carla is passionate about developing the next generation of diverse entertainment industry legal professionals. To that end, she served in the inaugural class of mentors for Unlock Her Potential (UHP), a mentorship program for women of color looking to pursue careers in the entertainment and media industry and beyond. She currently serves on UHP's "Brain Trust" (aka Board of Trustees).

“Toe 2 Toe”: The 2023-2024 Music Litigation “Paper Chase”

Even in the shadow of dozens of high-profile AI copyright lawsuits, music litigators have had a busy year. To be sure, one of the many new music copyright cases was brought by music publishers against AI company Anthropic. But many other cases have been winding their way through the federal courts, including fights over hip-hop lyrics; sampling and soundalikes; copyright grant termination; infringements on social media; and a potentially watershed case involving the embattled statute of limitations “discovery rule”. This panel will review the greatest hits of music copyright litigation over the last 12-18 months and provide updates on areas of the law that are critical to labels, publishers, and artists alike.
