Vice President, Creative, BMI
Catherine Brewton is one of the music industry’s foremost executives, advocates and a trusted leader for songwriters, composers and producers. As BMI Vice President of Creative, Brewton directs the outreach to songwriters and music publishers out of the Atlanta office, while working closely with the Creative departments in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville and London to bring top songwriters, producers and artists to BMI.
Brewton and her staff create and participate in educational, networking and showcase events specifically designed to inform and elevate up-and-coming and established songwriters alike. She produces and hosts many of BMI’s marquee annual events including the BMI R&B/Hip Hop Awards, the Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards, installments of BMI’s popular “How I Wrote That Song®” panel series focusing on Grammy-nominated songwriters and producers, and BMI’s annual “Know Them Now” showcases. Catherine Brewton continues to push the boundaries, serving as the executive producer for the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Live 2013 album release -- the first album/CD release of a PRO which was nominated for a GMA Dove Award -- and the television airing of the BMI Trailblazers of Gospel Music Awards. In addition, Brewton is in final negotiations to publish a project close to her heart, “The Peacemaker of Charlotte: How Pastor Barbara Brewton Cameron Transformed the City,” the story of her late mother Barbara Brewton Cameron.
Brewton joined BMI from her position as Executive Director of the Recording Academy (NARAS). She opened BMI’s Atlanta office in 1997 as Director of Creative and was promoted to Senior Director in 1999; named Assistant Vice President in 2002; and Vice President in 2005. Brewton is involved in numerous organizations including NARAS; Women Executives of America; serves on the board of the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM); is a co-founder and executive committee member of the Black Music Entertainment Walk of Fame (BMEWOF); is co-chair of the Georgia Entertainment Caucus (GEC); serves on the advisory board of Carnegie Hall; and is an executive board member of the Black American Music Association (BAM). Continuing to feed her philanthropic passion, Brewton founded and is the co-chair of “Hope for Harvest,” a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the youth through enrichment, nutritional and after-school programs, as well as promoting arts and academic achievement throughout Charlotte, NC and the surrounding area. Over a decade ago, Brewton opened the doors to The Barbara Brewton Hope for Harvest Youth Center, a beacon of hope throughout the community.
Brewton has been recognized in top publications including Ebony magazine’s “Power 100” issue and the Hollywood Reporter “10 Grammy Greats” spread. She’s has also been featured on the cover of Kontrol magazine’s “8th Anniversary Issue,” in Vibe magazine’s “30 Awesome and Inspiring” list for Women’s History Month and was featured in Root magazine four years in a row as one of their “Top 20 Gospel Industry Power Players.” Brewton has also been featured in Ebony magazine for its “Style Spotlight” column, in addition to her feature in Marie Claire magazine for its “Mogul Maintenance” column followed by a day in the life shoot in collaboration with Lancôme cosmetics. Brewton was honored by Billboard as one of the top Women in Music in 2013 and she made the magazine’s R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players List in 2019 and 2020 .
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Marketing from Shaw University. Brewton also attended the prestigious Harvard Business School for an executive management program.

In 2014, Johnson had the idea for a genre amplification company and launched COLORS Worldwide, Inc., an ecosystem designed to incorporate multiple underserved genres through live events, festivals, and content creation. From metal to country to EDM and hip hop, multiple companies have found similar success through genre amplification. This panel will explore the process through a conversation with those making an impact through passion.
