Carla Miller
Senior Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs, Universal Music Group
As Senior Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs for global powerhouse Universal Music Group (UMG), Carla manages all aspects of intellectual property strategy, including pre-release clearances and risk analysis, litigation, internal investigations, AI policy and legislative strategy support. In coordination with the two other major music companies, Carla was the lead UMG lawyer in a landmark case in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, in which the jury returned a $1 billion contributory copyright infringement verdict against a major internet service provider. While in private practice, Carla also represented the major U.S. record labels and motion picture studios in multiple landmark cases involving copyright law, internet piracy, and the First Amendment — including both the Napster and Universal City Studios v. Reimerdes cases — from the preliminary injunction through the appellate stages. She also second-chaired the defense of a federal trademark infringement lawsuit against a global hair product manufacturer, in which a jury returned a complete defense verdict in favor of her client and invalidated the plaintiff’s asserted mark on descriptiveness grounds.
Carla received her B.S. degree in Computer Science from Loma Linda University in Riverside, California. After a successful management consulting career with Accenture, leading capital markets project teams in Europe and the United States, Ms. Miller received her J.D. degree from the University of California, College of the Law — San Francisco, where she was a Senior Articles Editor for The Hastings Law Review. Following law school, Carla clerked for The Honorable Cecil F. Poole, Senior Circuit Judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
Carla is also a recognized leader in the New York State Bar Association, having served on the Executive Committee of the Commercial & Federal Litigation Section, and as a founding co-chair of both the Section’s Corporate Litigation Counsel Committee and Diversity Committee.
