ABOUT
Ian Harrison is CEO of A2IM (American Association of Independent Music), the nonprofit trade organization that serves as the central voice for independent music in the United States, with over 700 label and associate members. A2IM represents the interests of the independent sector, which now accounts for nearly 40% of all U.S. recorded music by ownership.
A2IM's work spans the full scope of what independent labels need to compete and grow. The organization leads policy advocacy on Capitol Hill, fighting for fair copyright protections, equitable streaming economics, and regulatory frameworks that don't leave independent rightsholders behind. It provides direct business development support, helping labels navigate complex industry issues from digital distribution and data standards to physical retail challenges and emerging technology. A2IM connects its members through mentorship programs, educational initiatives, networking events, and international trade missions designed to strengthen the broader independent community.
Flagship events Indie Week and the Libera Awards held every June in New York have become the world's premier gathering spot for the independent community.
Through its international partnerships with organizations like WIN, IMPALA, and AIM UK, A2IM ensures that American indie labels have a coordinated voice in global conversations about the future of music.
Harrison came to A2IM after more than two decades at Hopeless Records, the independent label with a 30+ year history that he joined early on and helped shape into one of the most recognized names in alternative music. During his time at Hopeless, the label released over 300 titles, sold more than 15 million records, and earned over 20 gold and platinum certifications with artists including All Time Low, Avenged Sevenfold, Sum 41, Neck Deep, Yellowcard, and Taking Back Sunday. His philanthropic work through the label's Sub City program raised over $3.5 million for music and mental health charities.
Harrison has been actively involved with A2IM since 2012 as a committee member, five-time Indie Week speaker, and mentor. He serves on the boards of SoundExchange and the Copyright Alliance and is a member of the Worldwide Independent Network board. He has been recognized on Billboard's Indie Power Players list in 2024 and 2025.

Music industry Innovator Scott Cohen & A2IM CEO Ian Harrison in Conversation: The Royalty Should Be the Floor, Not the Ceiling
Royalties have long defined how artists, songwriters and rightsholders participate in the economics of music. But they represent only one part of the financial value music creates. Who captures the rest — and should creators and rightsholders have a greater stake in it?
Music industry innovator Scott Cohen and A2IM CEO, Ian Harrison, examine where today’s music economy falls short, what that means from the creator’s perspective and why traditional royalty structures may no longer adequately reflect the full value music generates. Scott and Ian will put forward discuss a pioneering new model designed to move beyond royalties alone — and explore how artists, songwriters and rightsholders can participate more fully in the value their work creates.
Join us for a provocative conversation about ownership, participation and building a music economy that finally gives creators a greater stake in the success they make possible.
