Alex Grout

Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs, ASCAP

Alex Grout is Vice President of Business & Legal Affairs at ASCAP, providing strategic and legal guidance supporting the organization’s membership and licensing objectives. In his current role, he is ASCAP’s lead negotiator with members regarding affiliation and distribution issues, and also advises Executive Management on complex issues dealing with licensing, resignation, copyright, and other high-profile litigation and transactional issues. Alex also counsels internal stakeholders all day-to-day strategic issues relating to performance rights and music publishing. He has lectured at numerous engagements with major law firms, publishing companies, universities, and Grammy events.

Alex is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oneonta (B.A., magna cum laude) and of William & Mary Law School (J.D., cum laude) where he was also the Senior Articles Editor of the Business Law Review. Beyond his professional work, Alex is an experienced performer as a bass guitarist and was an NCAA Track & Field All-American.

CLE: Pivoting from Live to Virtual: Navigating the Legal Challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic had an immediate and devastating impact on the live entertainment sector. After SXSW was canceled in early March, other festivals quickly followed suit, first postponing and then canceling their 2020 live events. Many festival presenters are pivoting to a virtual model, which presents its own set of legal issues for festival organizers, including, but not limited to, the licenses required for performing music virtually, navigating restrictions imposed by platforms such as Facebook and Instagram Live and challenges to monetization posed by music label blocking rights. This panel will discuss evolving strategies for addressing these issues.
