Matt Pincus

Co-Founder & CEO, MUSIC

Matt Pincus is the Co-Founder and CEO of MUSIC, the first diversified investment vehicle dedicated to the business of music. Launched in May 2019, MUSIC investments thus far include leading music tech platform Splice, financial transparency startup HiFi (both of which Matt sits on the board), and ticketing platform DICE. The company recently announced the addition of two new partners – JS Capital Management and Schusterman Family Investments – and its initial capitalization of $200 million.

Previously, Matt was the Founder and CEO of SONGS Music Publishing, a company he established in 2006 and exited in 2017 with a sale to Kobalt Capital, Ltd. At the time of its sale, SONGS was the leading independent music publisher of contemporary music in the United States, peaking at 5.41% market share in the US according to Billboard. The company’s songwriters included The Weeknd, Lorde, Diplo, DJ Mustard, and many other global hitmakers. With its exit to Kobalt, SONGS became one of the highest-returning investments in a startup music publishing company, with a 27% IRR on a total capitalization of just over $20M.

During his time at SONGS, Matt was a longtime member of the Board of Directors of ASCAP, the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA), and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF). Currently, Matt serves on the Board of Directors of The Public Theater – an artist-driven, radically inclusive and fundamentally democratic theater of, by and for all people.

In a nod to his roots as the bass player for the seminal New York hardcore band Judge, Matt created TRUST Records, a not-for-profit music label dedicated to preserving the master recordings of classic American punk and hardcore music.

Before SONGS, Matt was a Strategy Associate at EMI Group, plc, one of the four major global music companies. Prior to that, he founded Some Records, an independent record label, and Ultra14, an Internet marketing firm. Matt started his career as a writer and Assistant Editor at New York Magazine. In 2002, he earned an MBA from Columbia Business School.
