General Counsel, Splice

Stacey Lager is a strategic, business-first senior executive lawyer and leader with vast knowledge and experience in the entertainment, digital, technology and media industries. With a collaborative and transparent approach to help business partners solve complex legal matters and drive practical solutions, she is an adaptable, decisive leader who thrives in fast paced environments with proven success in providing advice to C-Suite and senior leaders and is known for building high-performance legal teams. Stacey is currently the General Counsel at Splice where she leads the team that is responsible for handling all legal matters and strategic global business partnerships in the technology and entertainment sectors for the company. As Splice is the leading platform for music creation, Stacey and her team ensure that the music library of 2+ million royalty free sounds have clean intellectual property and that the products and tools on the platform use innovative technology and AI in an ethical way. Prior to her work at Splice, Stacey was Vice President, Business & Legal Affairs - Digital at Discovery, where she led the team that managed the development and structuring of the strategic digital business relationships across all of Discovery’s digital brands and multi-platform distribution outlets. Her work at Discovery was instrumental in the company prioritizing multi-platform distribution of its content (web, social media, mobile applications, OTT and streaming services). Prior to joining Discovery, Stacey was Vice President, Associate General Counsel at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia where she served as the deputy GC and led the team responsible for the development and structuring of MSLO’s strategic business relationships in the entertainment, media and merchandising industries. Earlier in her legal career, Stacey held counsel positions at ALM Media, NBC Universal, Atlantic Records, Serling Rooks Hunter McKoy Worob & Averill LLP, and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP.

Stacey started her career in the music business at 18 working at renowned record labels such as Arista, Atlantic, RCA, Capitol, Epic/Sony and Island/Def Jam in the A&R, publicity, artist development and marketing departments respectively. While working at Epic/Sony, she decided to go to law school -- at night –- so she could have more career options in the entertainment industry. During law school and upon being admitted to the New York State Bar, Stacey pursued the technology/digital aspect of the music/entertainment/media industries and has never looked back. Stacey holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and she received her JD from New York Law School.

Where are we now? Generative AI, Music and an Emerging Deal Ecosystem

The generative AI boom continues, and its use in the music industry has only gotten more pervasive and sophisticated since ChatGPT first came on the scene to signal the advent of this new technology. AI music generation companies are starting up and evolving; music rights owners are exploring new ways to monetize their content in this environment, including licensing music for AI training; music distributors are leveraging GenAI tools and models to enhance their services; investors are grappling with how generative AI is impacting catalog acquisition and valuation; and artists are seeking to leverage their brands and unique styles to create custom AI products for fans and downstream creators alike. This panel will explore the current commercial landscape of generative AI and the music industry, what deals are being made, what are the pain points, what practices and technologies are emerging to aid in monitoring and maintaining the current deals, and what are the legal hurdles and policies impacting the deal market.
