"Create the new music in the frame of Korean traditional music."
SANGJARU shows how Korean traditional music can be combined with western music to create exciting and innovative sounds. With three players including guitarist, ajaengist and percussionist, SANGJARU builds up their journey of creation in a box (=sangja) traditionally based on a sack (=jaru), which represents a broader artistic freedom.
SANGJARU has been agonizing over the forms and categories of traditional music ever since its foundation in 2014. Over time, however, the extremely subjective nature of the word “tradition” continued to reveal only vague boundaries, which eventually led to confusion, resulting in unrighteous agony. In order to resolve this problem, SANGJARU was on the pilgrimage path to Santiago de Compostela (Spain), which is called the path of enlightenment, and created new music based on the agony of thinking on the road where they created a “Camino de SANGJARU” and their first full-length "Taryeong."
SANGJARU’s music has been called "all new Korean modern music."
